The Virtual Wandering House

Through The Wandering House website, Northfield and Lanesboro residents can now record their audio testimonies directly here. This new phase of the project invites community members to reflect and record how notions of home have changed for them in light of the numerous events that have taken place in the last two years—a global pandemic, social unrest at home and abroad, amongst many others. Participants can use the questions below which are offered as a guide. 

In addition to audio testimonies, residents are encouraged to record ambient sounds of significance to them and specific to each town. The gathering period for both testimonies and ambient sounds goes from January to November of 2022. The material collected will become part of Sonic Landscapes of Southern Minnesota, a sound-mapping website and archive that will come live at the end of summer of 2022.

Q: What is The Virtual Wandering House?

The Wandering House is a multi-platform project that examines notions of home from the perspective of small towns in southern Minnesota. The project was launched in 2019 and took place in person in Northfield and Lanesboro. The project is being re-launched, this time virtually, to explore how notions of home have changed in these two places with the events of the past two years—a global pandemic and the social uprising following the killing of George Floyd, to name a few.

Q: How can I participate?

This project invites you to participate in TWO major ways:

  • By recording your thoughts directly here—audio testimonies—using the questions provided below as a guide. Answer the questions that resonate the most with you and feel free to share any other thoughts that seem relevant even if they are not mentioned. 
  • By recording ambient sounds of significance to you in your own town. For example, you might want to record a football game, or hanging out downtown with friends, or the sound of geese in the early evening. 

Q: What happens with the audio recordings and other material collected?

Q: Who is carrying out this project?

The Wandering House is the creation of artist, filmmaker and educator Cecilia Cornejo Sotelo. Originally from Chile and a long-time resident of the American Midwest, her work is known for placing community members at the center of the creative process, engaging them as active participants and co-creators of meaning. 

Q: Who is supporting this project?

Throughout its many phases, The Wandering House has received funding from the National Association of Latino Arts and Culture (NALAC, 2019), the McKnight Foundation (2020), the Minnesota State Arts Board (2021 and 2022), the Public Works Initiative at Carleton College (2018-2021), and most recently, from Forecast Public Art (2022). The project has partnered with the Northfield Public Library, the Human Rights Commission, the Northfield Arts Guild, the Arts & Culture Commission, and Lanesboro Arts. In addition to the above, in Northfield, we have partnered with Riverwalk Market Fair, Northfield Union of Youth (The Key), Northfield Retirement Community, Spring Wind Farm, Community Action Center, neighbors from Viking Terrace, Laura Baker Association Services. In Lanesboro our main partner is Lanesboro Arts.

La Casita Ambulante es un proyecto multi-plataforma que examina el significado del hogar desde la perspectiva de pueblos pequeños en el sur de Minnesota.   • Grabando sonidos ambientales significativos para ti en el pueblo donde vives. Por ejemplo, podrías grabar el sonido de un partido de fútbol, o a tus amigues disfrutando del downtown, o quizá el sonido de los gansos salvajes al atardecer.
